This is a class for the beginning quilter however, knowledge of sewing and how to use
your sewing machine is important. We will make the quilt from beginning to end in this
class. There will be homework to complete between classes.
You will need to bring the following to class:
1. A sewing machine that is in good working order and sews a straight seam. Yes, clean
and oil that machine before class and insert a new needle. Clean machines work
better and they work better with new needles. Don’t forget the cords you need with
your machine. Your machine manual.
2. A quarter inch presser foot and a walking foot.
3. 80/12 sewing machine needles, sharps are preferred for piecing and Quilting machine
4. Basic sewing supplies including a seam ripper, fine pins (we prefer Glass Heads), a
rotary cutter with a new blade, 6 1⁄2” X 24 1⁄2” ruler, an 8.5 inch square ruler, scissors,
thread snips, marking pencil or pen, and anything else you deem useful for sewing.
5. A good quality sewing thread that blends well with your fabrics.
The following is required for the class: Pattern and fabrics either from your stash OR, if
you chose, Ma’s Got”a Notion will have kits with the pattern included. You may also
visit Ma’s soon and pick out fabrics that will suit your décor needs. Before the October
29th class you will also need backing for your quilt that is at least 8 inches bigger that
your quilt both in width and length and batting for the quilt. We will discuss and
demonstrate making the quilt sandwich at the October 29th meeting and the various ways
of basting your quilt to prepare for quilting.
Please press all of your fabrics using Mary Ellen’s before you attend the class. We like to
have our fabric fairly stiff. You get more accurate cuts and more accurate seams.
Pressing stations and cutting surfaces will be provide at class, but you may bring your
own if you prefer.
Please bring drinks in spill proof containers. If you are coming straight from work, feel
free to bring a snack to eat during class.
